Kaw Klai

My name is Kaw Klai. My dad was from Wa Mi Gla and my mom was from Tal Ta Que. They have five kids in total. My mom could not breastfeed the first born child. When the baby was two or three months old, my dad went to Loo Plew to go find milk for my sister. On his way back home, there were Burmese people waiting to shoot him. They were trying to kill him but instead they shot him in the mouth. He did not die, but he lost a few of his teeth. We could not live there anymore, so we moved to Thailand, Noh Poe Camp for ten years, and later to Mae La Camp in 1997

When I was at Mae La camp, I was old enough to serve in the Army (ta pu sir) from 1997-2002. In 2002, I got shot and even though I was injured, I stayed in the camp from 2002-2004. At that time, I already had a family with three children. I left the camp on September 3, 2013. After living in the U.S for one year and had another child. Now, I have lived in California for a total of three years and do not speak any English. I never went to school, but I could sing from hearing people. I want my children to have an education and hope that their careers can be one of a doctor, police, firefighter or work in the water.
