Maung Kyaw

My name is Maung Kyaw and I was born in Na Yo Ta Ga Roo, community Tha Htoo Te. My house was built of wood and bamboo. I have 8 siblings, and I am fourth in the line. The sibling I am closest to was the youngest one. My parents were farmers and had a little garden. When I was young, I got to take care of my little siblings, because my parents had to work at farms. My other chore was carrying water from the well. I knew how to cook at 8 or 9 years old and my mom taught me how to cook. The Karen food I miss the most was rice, vegetables, and fruits that give you a lot of energy. Karen traditional food would be vegetables. When I went to buy food, it would take me 3 days to get there. It took us a long time, and the place was called Te Ke Na Pwe. We had to stay and spent a few nights to go shop there. I did not go to school and it was not that close to my house. When I was with my friends, together we worked and took care of cows. I have one child and taught my kid to go to school and to work hard. I celebrate Karen New Year and Birthdays. My parents religion was animism. The reasons we came to America was because of the problems like sicknesses and wars in my hometown. I was tired of living like that and wanted a better life.
